LI TAI, age 60 years, steersman, residing on board Fishing

Junk No; unknown, of Hong Kong, states:-

At about 15.00 hours on 1st January, 1940, I left 筲箕湾

Shaukiwan Harbour on board the above junk to go fishing in

Chinese Waters together with seven of a crew.

At about 06.15 hours on 9th January, 1940, my junk was

碣 石

海 at anchor about five miles off the shore at KIT SHK in HƠI

FING

FUNG District together with five other junks when I saw the

Crew of a Japanese motor boat which had set fire to five other

junks come alongside my junk. Four Japanese sailors dressed

in khaki uniform boarded my junk and ordered me and my fokis

into our dinghy and told us to row ashore. We had been rowing

for about 15 minutes when the Japanese set fire to my junk.

They then boarded their motor boat and steamed away in a

Testerly direction and set fire to some more junks which

were anchored about half a mile away. My junk and fishing

gear valued at $2,500.00 became a total loss.

At 12.00 hours on 10th January, 1940, I and my crew

boarded Fishing Junk No.1172 H.A. which conveyed us into

Hong Kong where we arrived at 08.00 hours on 12th January,

1940.
